Fish Present in the Fonteviva Lake
Rainbow trout
Originally it populated the Pacific coast of the entire North American continent, now, thanks to its physical characteristics and low costs, it is also widespread in lakes for sport fishing. Compared to brook trout it seems capable of using a broader food base. The dimensions of this specimen are around 30-35 cm, up to a maximum of 50 cm. |
Salmon trout
It is not a subspecies, but only trout whose pinkish color of the flesh resembles that of salmon. The color depends on the diet rich in carotenoids which, on farms, is often administered precisely to obtain the pink color of the meat. Consequently the characteristics of this species are the same as trout. |
Brown trout
It is present in the running waters of many Italian regions, in particular in the north there are hybrids such as the Po trout. It reaches 30-35 cm, up to a maximum of 50 cm in environments with good productivity and can weigh up to 4/5 kg. |
Char
The morphology of this fish is similar to that of the trout. The size is very variable from environment to environment; normally between 20 and 30 cm, in environments more favorable to growth even 40-50 cm, and exceptionally 80 cm with a weight of 10 kg in deep lakes. |
Fish can be purchased at the farm
In addition to the fish present in the pond, it is also possible to purchase other types of fish including sturgeon and carp. As they are not always available, please contact us to check availability.
Native Italian sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii)
It measures up to 2 meters in length, can live for around 80 years and weigh up to 80 kg. We remind you that the female of this fish reaches sexual maturation around 14-15 years of life and that reproduction can only take place every 2 -3-4 or 5 years. |
Acipenser Trasmontanus
Better known as “The American” since it is native to North America, it can reach 100 years of age, five meters in length and a weight of 300 kg and more. The female is larger than the male. A two and a half meter fish is about forty years old and weighs around one quintal. |
Carp
Cyprinus carpio, also commonly called mirror carp. Native to Persia, Asia Minor and China. The species was introduced into Italy two thousand years ago by the ancient Romans both for its diet and for its extraordinary ability to adapt, in fact it can now be considered to be an indigenous species. It reproduces in spring and summer. Variable in length between 30 and 60 centimeters and usually weighing between 3 and 35 kilos. It is an extremely long-lived fish and is estimated to live up to 100 years. Peaceful. It lives in groups that can number up to ten specimens. Omnivorous, it feeds on both animal organisms such as insects or earthworms and plant substances. |
Tench
The Tench has a stocky body, covered in small scales, with large fleshy fins. The livery is greenish on the back, lighter and tends towards yellow in the ventral area. The fins are green-brown. The eyes are red. It usually reaches 30-50 cm in length per 4 kg of weight, although tench up to 84 cm long have been recorded (not in Italy). Sexual maturity occurs at four years for males and two for females. Omnivorous fish, it feeds on benthic and vegetal organisms, especially at night. |
Eels
Male eels can reach a length of 50 cm, while females can reach 150 cm and weigh up to 6 kg. In fresh water the eel becomes a fish with nocturnal habits, which during the day lives hidden in burrows or immersed in the bottom. Depending on the type of nutrition, two ecological forms are distinguished: the “pointed-headed eel” which feeds on insects, larvae, crustaceans and worms and the predatory “broad-headed eel” which feeds on fish. |
